Gateway of the World, Miami International Airport

This 2013 Honor Award winner is a terrazzo installation at Miami International Airport. This 32-foot-diameter globe and its 6-foot-diameter moon in a recessed floor combine 16 colors with 16 marble and glass aggregates. The aluminum divider strips forming the circumferences of the earth and moon are the only divider strips used in the installed. Precast terrazzo forms the boundaries of the landmasses. Details such as the Mississippi and Amazon rivers were cut using a Dremel tool and refilled with terrazzo resin. Bits of mirror depict distant stars, the black sky meeting an 18” cove base.
